A philanthropic organization (PO) is either officially registered as a civil society organization (Asociacón Civil) by a Notary Public or it operates as an informal group. Upon registration, civil society organizations automatically receive their tax-exempt status, but they cannot receive tax-deductible donations until they are also registered as authorized donees (Donataria Autorizada), which is granted by the Mexican Internal Revenue Service (Sistema de Autorización Tributaria, SAT).
