This webinar seeks to amplify the voices of a range of thought leaders from within the philanthropy ecosystem for higher education in Africa to explore the opportunities and challenges that the enabling legal and regulatory environment for philanthropy brings to donors, academic advancement officers, and both public and private universities. The webinar shares the findings from the Africa edition of the 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index in a short presentation as a starting point for the panel before launching into a lively discussion between the gathered experts.

The African Union’s theme of the year 2024 is “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century.” Prioritizing higher education has a direct connection to accelerating economic growth. As more Africans invest in the future—particularly in higher education, how can we leverage all assets to support both donors and universities? What are the existing barriers and incentives to giving, and how can African universities better engage African donors in building resilience in higher education in the continent?

Building on the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy’s ongoing Higher Education Philanthropy Initiative, this webinar convenes a panel of experts to discuss the philanthropic landscape for higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, the engagement of African donors in higher education, and how the challenges in giving to higher education can be addressed to facilitate and increase African giving both within countries and across national borders. This webinar provides an open door for donors, philanthropists, higher education leaders, scholars, and policymakers to discuss ways to improve the philanthropic environment surrounding higher education.
