The Global Philanthropy Indices

Governments cannot solve the world’s problems alone. Global philanthropy helps address some of the most pressing issues our world faces today, from public health crises and poverty to illiteracy and climate change.

Giving across borders exceeds USD 800 billion annually through philanthropy, official development assistance, remittances, and private capital investment. The impact charitable gifts can have depends on the state of a country’s civil society, including the political, social, cultural, and legal variables that shape its philanthropic environment.

By equipping grantmakers, state officials, NGO leaders and philanthropists with a comprehensive understanding of the global giving landscape, we can increase philanthropic engagement and its impact, spur generosity, and create positive and lasting change in the world. This is the mission of the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy’s Global Philanthropy Indices.

Transfer from Hudson Institute

The Hudson Institute’s Center for Global Prosperity first published The Index for Global Philanthropy and Remittances in 2006. The Index for Philanthropic Freedom was launched by the Hudson Institute in 2015.

For over 10 years, these global philanthropic indices provided in-depth analyses on the size and sources of cross-border giving and the incentives and barriers to philanthropy around the world.

In 2017, the publications were formally transferred to the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, which will continue to publish the reports under the titles the Global Philanthropy Environment Index and the Global Philanthropy Tracker.

At the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, the indices will continue to grow as vital markers of global philanthropy that equip policymakers, philanthropy and nonprofit leaders, business leaders, the news media, and the public with a clear understanding of the global philanthropic landscape.

The Global Philanthropy Environment Index (GPEI) is the world’s largest and most comprehensive effort to equip policymakers and philanthropists with a clear understanding of the philanthropic environment worldwide and its impact on giving both within countries and across borders.
